The annual Utah State Fair in Salt Lake City offers family fun and entertainment with a unique Western flair for ten days in early September. The usual livestock and agriculture competitions and judging are held daily, but there is so much more to see and do. Popular country musicians and gospel artists perform nightly, featuring events like the annual Colgate Country Showdown, the largest country music talent search in the United States. Past winners have included Martina McBride and Brad Paisley. Another favorite each year is the Elvis Extravaganza, where contestants compete for cash and prizes and a spot in the Elvis impersonator national finals.
Cowboys and cowgirls from around the world participate in 'Utah's Own Rodeo,' sponsored by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Four days of bull riding, tie-down roping, steer roping, bareback and saddle bronc riding thrill visitors each evening. Pint-sized buckaroos, under 50 pounds, participate in the wild-and-wooly Mutton Bustin' event. The National Strongman, Inc. championships draw the top amateur strongmen in the United States for three grueling events that determine the next Strongman Pros.
More unique amusements include a strolling washboard jamboree, chain-saw carving, comedy shows, an interactive gaming station, a family playhouse, a strolling 10 feet tall robot, a 'mental illusionist,' and live animal shows. Most events are free with gate admission; seating tickets can be obtained the day of an event at the Grandstand Ticket Office. Parking is available at five lots around the fairgrounds. Handicap parking and wheelchair rental are provided. Public transportation is available on the UTA bus or TRAX lines. Hotel accommodations can be arranged at the Crystal Inn, the host hotel of the Utah State Fair.
